Custom House

ABOUT THE PROJECT

As one of the 10 new stations being built as part of the Crossrail project, Custom House helps creates new transport links through London. The site of the new Elizabeth line station, constrained by the existing DLR line and power cables passing overhead, residential properties to the north and ExCeL London to the south, required a unique solution.

DESIGN DELIVERED

Vexcolt designed the new bespoke Megatec 390 joint to meet the DDA and slip resistant criteria. At 1650mm wide it’s the largest joint ever manufactured in the UK. Offering horizontal movements of +/-25mm and vertical movement of 120mm. This meets the 1 in 12 DDA requirements. An 80 grit finish was applied to the stainless steel to meet the slip resistance required. Vexcolt also provided the Megatec 300 and Micratec NL products throughout the station.

SPECIFIC CHALLENGES

To provide step-free access from street to train, the station had to meet DDA regulations. With a vertical settlement movement of –120mm this provided a challenge to the architects when it came to linking the stations platform to the pedestrian bridge connecting to the ExCel Centre. Any proposals also had to meet a wet & dry slip resistant rating of 45.
